The Weight of Adulthood and the Grace of Surrender

People ride a mostly empty train car.

There comes a season in adulthood when the weight of responsibility presses in—paying bills, budgeting income, helping parents, and thinking about settling down. Some days, it feels like everyone else is moving forward—buying homes, living independently, supporting their families, thriving in their careers—while you feel stuck, unsure of where to go next.

It’s even harder when you didn’t grow up in a well-off family. You carry not just your own dreams but the hopes of those you love. You think about their future, how you can give back, how you can support them as they grow older. And sometimes, that weight becomes overwhelming. You cry not just for yourself but for the life you wish you could give them. And in the midst of it all, a quiet thought lingers—what about me?

Adulthood is hard. Life isn’t the same for everyone. Some are born into privilege, free to chase their passions without worry. Others must fight for every step forward, torn between duty and desire.

There are moments when people say, "Just trust God. Everything should be for the Lord." And while faith is at the center of everything, it’s not about separating faith from family, dreams, or responsibilities. How can we be good stewards of our faith if we neglect the people God has entrusted to us? How can we truly honor Him if we ignore the needs of our parents while focusing only on ourselves?

This season feels lonely because we feel deeply. We watch our parents grow older, and we can’t skip this part. We carry the weight of wanting to give back, of worrying how to help. And yet, we keep our struggles to ourselves because we know they already have so much on their plate.

But even in this heaviness, we are not alone. God sees the burden we carry. He knows our silent sacrifices, the nights we cry, the weight we feel. And in the midst of it all, He remains—our provider, our strength, our refuge.

Then, surrender comes. The desire to control, to hold on, to carry everything alone—it begins to fade. We learn to practice gratitude, to see the lessons in the struggle, to release our worries, pride, fears, and selfishness.

So if you’re in this season, feeling stuck, feeling behind—breathe. Take it one step at a time. Your story isn’t meant to look like everyone else’s. You are not failing. You are growing. And in due time, everything you pour out in love, in faithfulness, in sacrifice—God will honor it. He always does.

Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. Psalm 55:22
